What is public space? Why do artists choose to work in these unconventional places? How do they use these spaces around the world? What kinds of legislation and technical characteristics do professionals have to take into account?
You can access this 4 modules MOOC packed with tools and inspiration to help you understand and play a role in artistic creation in public space. As you progress through the course, you will learn about different artworks designed for public space, the way they interact with their locations, and the specific features of writing and audience relations in this context.
You will be given methodological tools and practical exercises to help you try out these ideas and take on the role of a creator. You will get support from various European artists and professionals, who will share their experience and knowledge with you.
Create in Public Space takes you on a 4modules, with a specific theme covered each week:
Module 1 – Introduction to aesthetics, history and institutions Module 2 – Specific dramaturgical issues Module 3 – Site-visit and in situ writing methodology Module 4 – Understanding issues related to the relationship with the audience
Starting on October 3rd, we will release one module each week to pace your progression. At the end of the fourth first weeks, all the courses contents will stay available without time limit. You will be free to browse the contents at your own rhythm, watching videos and performing the exercises again and again.
Once connected, you can access all contents of the MOOC (courses, downloadable ressources, forum, profile…) from the home page and the main menu.
Courses home
This page gives you to have an easy access to the courses, to free and downloadable ressources, and to the forum.
Courses
This page is your main access to all the MOOC modules. Courses are conceived as a progression from module 1 to module 4, but you can navigate freely between lessons and create your own path.
Once you’ve started a module, the simple layout lets you easily browse between sections: the “next” button validates the active lesson and moves on to the next lesson. On the left side, a detailed menu makes accessible and gives you an insight on the module contents, highlighting those you have completed.
All the other pages of the website stay accessible from the navigation menu on the upper-right-corner of your screen.
Forum
The MOOC forum allows you to discuss with other participants. For some activities, we suggest you to post your answer on the forum tas a way to share it with the community. However this is not mandatory to complete the activity.
Ressources
here, you can get a free access to many downloadable ressources. For each module you can find a general sum-up as well as the transcription of all lessons, the lis of all projects quoted in the lessons and a bibliography. You can also find a glossary, to check important vocabulary and their definitions.
Dashboard
From the main menu you can access your “dashboard” where you can visualize your progression and your theme badges and your end certificate.
This content will provide three-hour learning sessions each week, broken down into:
• about fifteen lessons, in the form of short 3-minute videos • 5 to 10 additional interviews with European artists and professionals • educational activities such as quiz and practical exercises, for testing comprehension and putting knowledge into practice
Additional resource documents allow you to “go further”: each week, those summarize the lessons and key notions, providing external links to help you find out more about all the artistic projects mentioned in the course.
As you progress, we propose a series of pedagogical exercises. Depending on the case, they are designed to check your understanding (quiz and multiple-choice questions) or to make you experience the concepts covered during the lessons through practice. The exercises in “quiz” format are automatically corrected. In practical exercises, you are invited to complete written assignments and upload them to the platform. Unfortunately, we do not have the ability to proofread all these assignments, so they are not corrected. When it is relevant, we therefore propose standard corrections. We also invite you to share your work on the dedicated MOOC forums and to read and react to other participants’ work.
Nota bene: once they are online, the submitted exercises are unfortunately no longer accessible. We are working on it, but until then, please take care to secure your production on your computer.
As you progress, the pages marked as completed and the activities you’ve done will add up to give you your progress rate. This is expressed as a percentage and corresponds to how much of the course has been completed.
Each week, completing at least 90% of the content earns you a theme badge as proof of your hard work.
At the end of the four weeks, those who obtain 4 theme badges will receive a course completion certificate in their name.
