Module 2
writing with public spaces

The second module of the MOOC focuses on the specific aspects of dramaturgyDramaturgy can be defined as the process of creating artistic content and adapting it for the stage. Dramaturgy organises the link between what the artist wants to express, the way it is expressed and the context chosen to do it. Just like in a musical score, each component can become major or minor. The place of each of these components requires fine-tuning dependent on the desired meaning and effect. Using public space as a place for artistic creation and dissemination raises its own specific dramaturgical issues. Unlike the theatre, the performance takes place in spaces full of meaning, movements and sounds that interact with the work. These interferences fundamentally... for public spaceThe concept of public space carries multiple meanings and has been extensively discussed in social science over the past fifty years. It first appeared in the field of political and communicative philosophy in the work of Jürgen Habermas, initially referring to the place of expression and confrontation of private opinions, as a synonym of the public sphere. The term was then borrowed by geographers to refer to open or closed, publicly or privately-owned physical spaces that were accessible to the general public. It is used in the arts in its broadest possible meaning, including both the spatial and communication dimensions. Back glossary projects. - public spaceThe concept of public space carries multiple meanings and has been extensively discussed in social science over the past fifty years. It first appeared in the field of political and communicative philosophy in the work of Jürgen Habermas, initially referring to the place of expression and confrontation of private opinions, as a synonym of the public sphere. It is used in the arts in its broadest possible meaning, including both the spatial and communication dimensions. Back glossary as a mediumIn communication, the notion of medium refers to the means by which a message is transmitted between a sender and receiver. It is the communication channel. Public space can be considered a medium as it communicates the meaning or message of a work, and also because it has a recognisable influence on what is seen and makes a contribution to the work. The medium can play a more or less predominant role in the project. An artist can choose a location for its geometric and practical qualities, and remain indifferent to the other aspects of the space, which is referred to as a “support medium” (backdrop). The artist may also choose to use elements of the space as raw mate...: the role of the location in the narrative and dramaturgical development
- adjusting perspective: ways of taking the space into account
- carrying a message: the aesthetic categories linked to the artist’s dramaturgical intentions.
This module developed with critic and playwright Marie Reverdy.
