Borders and mobilities
Public space consists of physical and symbolic borders that limit or guide uses and interactions. These borders, on which public action is often based, can be an obstacle to the exercise of fundamental and citizens’ rights. They can generate or reinforce conflicts, hinder freedom of movement, or limit opportunities to appropriate one’s living environment and build social ties. How can public action promote ways of living side by side, and creating common ground that breaks down borders, rather than reinforcing them? How can it encourage bridges and movement between communities, between public and private spaces, and between landscapes?
