Narratives, fiction and reality
Territories are made up of stories that may or may not be told. These stories may be recent or inherited from long ago, opening the doors of fiction as a means of telling reality – it’s storytelling. Storytelling makes things visible, provides knowledge and recognition, talks about uses and ways of inhabiting. But what stories do we want to tell? Who is the legitimate author of these stories? What does fiction do to reality? How can we make diverse voices heard, including those that are silent? How do they enter into a conversation? Creating or passing on stories about a place and its inhabitants can have a major impact on their living conditions. Storytelling can assign and maintain representations or fantasies, as well as breathe new life into places and their inhabitants.
