I took part in Bells for Peace as part of MIF19. I made a bell previously in a workshop and brought it along to the experience. Yoko Ono led the crowd through a series of instructions via pre-recorded video, and encouraged us to ring our bells at the right time. It was celebratory, joyful and genuinely lovely. I went with my baby and my Dad and we also took a bell my Grandad had left us. Being able to chat to people around us was the best part. The screen was at the ‘stage’ end and there were 2 or 3 large church bells around the square too. It was introduced by some young people and wasn’t too long. Some people complained that Yoko Ono wasn’t there in real life but I didn’t think it mattered that much. It was a really special moment. It needed the production of the big screen and PA for everyone to be able to hear (there were thousands there) and they also gave out bells for those who didn’t bring their own. There was a large stage. I think there may have been some trees with wishes for peace tied to them but I didn’t see that part.

A park – somewhere that absolutely anyone is free to use and is accessible to all
A library – an indoor space that is accessible to all, has resources for anyone to use or borrow (computers, books, instruments, newspapers etc) and space to sit and reflect.
