    Image: a building at Olivais. Lisboa

    • material description: structure, lines, volume, materials
    vertical/ horizontal; concrete; glass;

    • functional description: function, purpose
    • buildings for habitation;
    • usual description: uses, users, visitor traffic
    dormitory : for inhabitants use and their visitors,

    Now describe it by looking at it differently or “sideways”:
    a beautiful pattern of rectangles , the windows can be open to daily lifes, dreams- story tellers

    • as a remnant: of a story, an era, an event
    the buildings were made in the late seventies in Olivais, Lisboa, the firsts inhabitants came for from Angola and Mozambique, ex-colons what have to run because of the decolonization

    • as a symptom: of a social, political or other reality
    • colonial war; displacements

    • as a symbol: of power, education, health, etc.
    , citizenship rights, capitalism ,

    Now write a five-line summary of a story that draws meaning from the building or viewpoint.

    She lived there for the last 40 years, since she run from the war in Africa, the country gave her a house , a new life, but she still complains , for white supremacy , she was rich before the war , after she is just someone like any other, she hates this democratic society , she watches TV soaps , in the next window another story, an immigrant from Angola, she works hard to have money to pay the rent , she misses her family in Africa, her husband is aggressive, she watches the TV soap , another window, a man from Pakistan praying; another window… the kids outside , in the yard, talking in cell phones, motorcycles; in the horizon the river. Sounds of boats
    at any moment people can open the windows and start to sing or dance or just being there looking to the river
